Wonder why Californians are still moving to Texas? Primarily it’s because in Texas you can get a lot more for your money. In 2022 California had a cost index of 151.7, while Texas had a cost index of 91.5. A state’s cost index is calculated by how much it costs to cover basic expenses like groceries, transportation, housing and healthcare.
In California, you’ll pay 50% more than the national average cost of living, while in Texas, you’ll pay about 10% less than the national average.
In addition to the lower cost of living in Texas, unlike California, your income is tax free from a state income tax.
Texas also has a growth economy with several of Texas’ major cities among some of the fastest-growing economies in the nation, with Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas-Fort Worth holding the second, third, and fifth spots, respectively, on Forbes’ list of the 10 largest cities with the fastest-growing economies. This growth economy has made it much easier to find and keep employment in Texas vs California.
