Homeownership Tips

Here are four homeownership tips.

First, make a homeowner’s journal. I wish I had done this when I bought my first property. It will make it easier for you to find all history on your house from homeowner’s insurance to repair receipts. A bonus to keeping the journal is that when you sell, your future buyer will really appreciate having such great documented history.

The second is to live in your house for at least a year before making any substantial renovations. It takes about 12 months to really understand how you will live in your home, and after this time, you can feel confident making additions or reconfiguring rooms.

Another tip is to finish the projects you start. It’s so common to become adjusted to living with incomplete projects, and it feels tremendous when they’re finished, so don’t wait.

And, last though most important, budget for the unexpected. If a HVAC all of a sudden needs replacing, instead of the financial shock, you have the security to address it quickly.
