Tips for Hiring a Good Contractor

Three tips to help you find the best contractor for your needs.

As a real estate broker for almost two decades, I’ve experienced working with all sorts of contractors. Whether you’re a buyer looking to add an addition to your home or a seller looking to do some repairs before you sell, today I’ll share some tips on how to hire a great contractor so that you don’t get stressed out or spend too much time or money:

  1. Close referrals. If you can get a referral from a co-worker, friend, family member, or neighbor, that’s the best way to go. Sites like Yelp are not always accurate because they hire people to post good reviews for them.
  1. Cost isn’t everything. When you’re hiring a contractor, don’t hire them based on cost alone. My friend always hires contractors based on cost and ends up hiring and firing throughout the process, which ends up costing twice as much money and time.
  1. Previous clients. Ask contractors about the last three people they worked for and find out how those projects went. Follow up with those other clients if possible, and get their feedback.
