This is one of my very favorite questions clients ask! So much of my answer depends on budget and lifestyle, but here is my personal list!
Walkability is my #1 wish when looking for a home and very short commutes to all I like to do. This puts Clarkesville at the top of my list. It’s on the immediate west edge of downtown, and it’s an easy walk to all DT offers, Lady Bird Lake and also has its own restaurants, coffee shops and grocery stores tucked in the neighborhood.
About 5 miles north of DT, Rosedale offers this same walkability. It’s a ½ mile to grocery stores, restaurants and every amenity that could be needed as it’s also on the northern edge of our medical district. Rosedale boasts the most fabulous playground I’ve seen in central Austin; it includes a covered basketball pavilion as well as a swimming pool that’s open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Just south of DT is our trendiest zip code, 78704. It offers walkability to some of our most popular restaurants and nightlife. It’s also a skip, hop and a jump to the Congress Bridge, which pulls in quite the crowd on the bridge and in boats under the bridge during bat season. During the summer at sunset millions of bats take off and is a wonder to see.
These neighborhoods skirt our DT, which is one of the nation’s top DTs to live. It has everything, from the original Whole Foods, which is a tourist hot spot, to every type of dining. The condo buildings all boast different vibes, and there is a perfect building for everyone. Their common trait is easy access to all amenities and the Lady Bird Lake and Trail.
I could go on and on, but as walkability is what I want most personally, this is my top of the walkability neighborhood’s list!
